This is really painful because I was playing the game for each evening but now I am very scared to hit the save button because it could mean I will have to replay the level from the last successful save. This has brought my progress through the campaigns to a halt... Anyways I did some debugging and increasing the resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 has seemed to reduce the chance of this but I could be wrong. Also when the crash occurs it always has begun writing the file and most times it gets more than 1/2 of the file written.
