New fresh install in a spare HD to test the issue: no luck, the same behavior
(black screen with mouse pointer...) - I'll update the log/debug output

* the machine have an NVIDIA GTX 720, but I'm on opensource drivers (just
installed Xubuntu 18.04 and WINE [according to https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu -
it's version 3.14 now])
