Still no good. There is some speculation that the effectiveness of this workaround depends on whether or not one has prior characters in the game.
I can also confirm that renaming or deleting both files isn't a general solution for everyone. Now I just have a black screen and the game's mouse cursor. I thought it's a problem with directx now, for I have tried everything like reinstalling wine or d3dx9 and different options in the "Libraries" tab, but other games like LotRo work fine.
