I also had this error when launching in 10.04, I had first installed PvsZ using winetriks on Linux Mint 11.04 in which it worked as long as I browsed to it in netbook/.local/share/wineprefix/Plants vs Zombies and clicked on the .exe. ... I've had some problems with the game during loading, in between levels, and I can not run full screen.
Just a note: this bug report was originally about the installation failure, but seemingly you have problems when starting the already installed game (which is indeed reproducible with the trial version of PvZ, available from Popcap).
