I've tried every Arch Linux release up until 1.7.43 too and they all have the same issue. wine-stable-1.6.2 from the AUR works fine.
Have you tried 1.7.13? I managed to get that version working using Arch Time Machine's archive.
If you have the time, it would be beneficial to try regression testing against that version. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
