It appears it's specific to the GF FX5500. I don't have the problem on another system with a Geforce 4 Ti4200 and neither on my Intel chip (that one does have locking problems though). Unfortunately I can only test your patch the earliest on Friday, because that comp is at my parents' place. I will post my results here then.
