If you're into Wild Ass Guesses, then perhaps IsDBCSLeadByteEx in Global_Chr
for some reason returns true for 0xff, even though it shouldn't.
Until I get better understanding of what VT_BSTR is, I likely won't get a
better shot.
That is if it's already been excluded that Asc is converting an error code from
Chr.
