This is what gives xev on one keypress:

KeyRelease event, serial 26, synthetic NO, window 0x4200001,
    root 0x5d, subw 0x0, time 3512512, (411,305), root:(716,842),
    state 0x2000, keycode 42 (keysym 0x6d0, Cyrillic_pe), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes: 
    XFilterEvent returns: False
