Perhaps it's a macOS vs Linux issue? There may have been something with DirectX
allowing the text to render fine on macOS for the older engine (10-13) but not
on the newer engine (14-17), while it was broken on both for Linux?

Either way, when Wine 4.14 comes out I'll give it a test.
