When you just run it with those options from a terminal does it show winedbg or some other crash information? I mean the lines of code where it actually crashed.
No it doesn,'t; I start steam, then double-click on 'Half-life demo'; the screen resolution changes, then there is a brief black screen (about a tenth of a second), then I get back to the steam interface.
