Right... I don't think anyone except the original poster is disagreeing with that. What I am asking for is subpixel rendering, which freetype *does* support. Your average person is going to get that confused with "Cleartype", because they are similar. Cleartype uses subpixel rendering, but it does more than that too. The potentially patent-infringing code has to do with subpixel rendering, not "Cleartype". But, as I mentioned, Wine does not need to implement any patent-infringing code to get a subpixel-rendering option, as that can be set in freetype.
