The company/product is dead now ( http://gigaom.com/2008/08/03/socialfm-formerly-mercora-shuts-down/ ). The client times out when trying to connect for updates before showing it's main gui. The eclipse bug which is essentially the same problem works when displaying embedded browser windows - so consider it fixed.
