I am running ubuntu 10.10, 2.6.32-26-386 and wine 1.3.6. I just conducted the following test 1. Start Evernote (launches OK) 2. Go to Help / Check for updates (wizard pops up) 3. Proceed through the wizard to install (appears OK but seems fast, evernote then restarts) 4. Check version through Help / About (still shows as 4.0.1). If I allow it to remind me to upgrade on startup and follow it's prompts I see the same behaviour.
