if I try to run the game via the terminal, it won't work at all.
Make sure you cd into the game's folder before running it. Not doing so tends to trip up a lot of games under Wine. (In reply to comment #5)
Also, it seems that the UK version (which I'm using) is an actual different version to the US version. Seems odd, but still, it could turn out to be the reason you can't reproduce the bug.
Can you check if you still see the bug using the same steps as me (fresh install, clean wineprefix, winetricks directx9)?
