Yeah, with XMODIFIERS I can toggle between
working and non-working.

Without XMODIFIERS: wine notepad -> hang
With XMODIFIERS: XMODIFIERS=1 wine notepad -> no hang

But something's still fishy:

no window-manager: wine notepad -> no hang
with twm: wine notepad -> hang

both times without XMODIFIERS.
