confirmed with wine-0.9.21: Here, I don't see *any* modes in the dropdown.

$ xrandr
 SZ:    Pixels          Physical       Refresh
*0   1024 x 768    ( 302mm x 232mm )  *60

Using virtual desktops doesn't change anything.
