That did not work for me, but I found the idea of status changes to be interesting. What I do, and it's worked 4 or 5 times without fail (at least for one open chat window) is to first type something... Then go to your Friends window and change your own status. I simply went through the list, changing my status all the way through offline, then back online then through again. Once I did that, chat started refreshing correctly and working great. This is a hassle, but it works for me. I believe this is something that the Wine devs need to take seriously.
