So, it looks like the code is getting to here in winealsa.drv/mmdevdrv.c
(AudioClient_Initialize):

            FIXME("EXCLUSIVE mode with EVENTCALLBACK\n");
            return AUDCLNT_E_DEVICE_IN_USE;
