I had the same error on the Steam Installed version.
If you are running freedom force in Steam you should be able to work around the issue by running in windowed mode. Just modify the launch options,in the general tab of the games properties menu, to include something similar to the line below.
-windowed -w 1024 -h 768
You might be able to get it working in fullscreen mode without crashing using some of the other launch options at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1040-JWMT-2947.

I have to correct myself. It doesn't look like the -w and -h parameters work. Leave those off and it should launch.
