Well, for pure alsa (default = dmix:0), it hangs in the same place:
in winmm/tests/wave.c:
it goes into 
for (j = 0; j <= loops; j++) 
loop but does not leave it.
It hangs on writing header 9 of 10.
I can't quite figure out, what should be changed for this to work.

But still, issue of being able to override 'default' with custom string should
be addressed.
