These are the minimal options to reproduce the segmentation fault:
-O2 -mtune=i686 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2

Whenever you omit one of these, there won't be a segmentation fault.
So perhaps, it's a compiler bug.
This is my version:
gcc (SUSE Linux) 4.3.1 20080507 (prerelease) [gcc-4_3-branch revision 135036]
