Upgrade to 1.0-rc1. That version is *REALLY* old. If it still occurs, try (re)moving ~/.wine and see if that helps.
Can this program be downloaded anywhere?
Follow up. I've tried wine-1.0-rc1, but it too failed. So, tried a new .wine and Legacy backup works now. Then re-installed the dlls etc. and all looks good so far. The previously reported bug on copy/paste crashing still is present.
