In wine 1.1.40, Acrobat Pro 6 finally installs.
I tested the "detect and repair" bug and the problem still exists, just as described above.
I wonder if the fix ever got into the main wine distribution?
It did, please test the version of Wine that included the previous fix. Does it work: yes - file a new bug.
