Unbelievable. The patch fixed it 100%; played for two hours perfectly today.
I understand why it can't be applied to trunk (specific game bug) but it should be seriously considered, unless it breaks anything else. Perhaps have a 'hacks' wine, if we're worried about bugging up the code.
You're free to have your own branch. There is a hacks.git, but unsupported by wine.
