The assertion failure is from mesa, very likely a Mesa bug, but I'll leave that for a d3d guy to decide for sure. Yeah, probably Mesa. However, I should note that SC2 works fine for me with r600g from current git (a0a9e56). You don't mention to specific driver you're using, but that probably means this is either a regression specific to 8.0.1, a packaging issue or something else specific to your setup.
