Thanks for your input. I wanted to try the suggested workaround but "winetricks
xact" currently fails for me on a new wineprefix with the following final
lines:

Executing wine regsvr32 xaudio2_7
regsvr32: Failed to load DLL 'xaudio2_7'
------------------------------------------------------
Note: command 'wine regsvr32 xaudio2_7' returned status 3.  Aborting.
