Sorry for taking so long to get around to this.

Oddly the Steam version that's shipped already seems to be modded? It has the
same version number. Maybe not the same mod, though? I checked again, picking
up two weapons in the starting area (an arrow and an old sword) and both render
fine.

It might indeed need an NVidia card to reproduce.

There's always a chance it's fixed though, two major versions later, if you
have the ability to retest?
