page fault on write access

This can happen within an hour to ~4 hours of play. 
Wine 1.5.9 via MacPorts
XQuartz 2.7.2
Winetricks: ie8 winhttp

HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D
 - DirectDrawRenderer = opengl
 - VideoMemorySize = 1024
 - VideoPciDeviceID = 0x1200
 - VideoPciVendorID = 0x10de

The crash happens regardless of regedit tweaks.

Also, in bash, I notice even with occlusion off, I receive a constant string of
messages: 
fixme:d3d:wined3d_occlusion_query_ops_get_data 0xnnnnnnnn Wrong thread,
returning 1 

Occasionally: 
fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8
