Afaik this is either a driver or X server problem. If you look in your Xorg log
(typically in /var/log) you'll probably find a crash with mentioning
ProcRRSetScreenConfig/RRCrtcSet. This is possibly the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/371405 and similar
bugs.
