I just did some more testing and #Removing winehq packages and install Ubuntu 17.10's default - wine-development (2.18-1) has it working sudo apt install wine-development Once it's started it works still if I go back to the same winehq 3.0 packages! Then if I change some graphics settings (not sure which ones, but not just resolution) it will fail out with the same error.
