Finally came around to test it on another machine. 16-bit graphics mode also do
fail with this card:

Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

and this driver:

xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.3.2-2+lenny6)

Again 24-bit modes work fine. This reduces chances again that it is a driver
issue.
