Hm, could you attach a +wininet,+tid trace?  I'm curious whether threading has
anything to do with the issue.  According to the OpenSSL FAQ[1], OpenSSL is
thread safe, provided CRYPTO_set_locking_callback() and
CRYPTO_set_id_callback() are called, and wininet does neither.
