The current issue is that fixme:d3dx:ID3DXMeshImpl_OptimizeInplace D3DXMESHOPT_ATTRSORT vertex reordering not implemented returns E_NOTIMPL; and goes into "cleanup" https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/tree/master/patches/d3dx9_36-... fixes that. Without that hack or patch you get a crash.
