Oh, I should have mentioned with my earlier comment that doing anything with
the created (and non-functional) console like Properties or using the scrollbar
causes an X BadAlloc error:

X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  53 (X_CreatePixmap)
  Serial number of failed request:  1427
  Current serial number in output stream:  27459
