According to "https://wiki.winehq.org/Sound" and the section "Help! My sound isn't working!" the reasoning is the different audio- backends in WinXP and Win7 and why selecting WinXP in the settings makes a difference. It'd be curious to know if there's a way to force whatever backend is emulated in WinXP could be selected in a Win7 wine prefix if anyone has any insight.
