We usually use things like WINEDEBUG=+relay,+atl and look at the log,
possibly adding TRACE statements in the component of interest.
You might consider adding a dummy implementation of AtlAxDialogBoxA
and see if that gets called right before the crash.

You can also use winedebug, occasionally that's helpful.
