I used to be able to play this game long ago, maybe with wine-1.0, so this seems like a regression.
I am installing 32bit Kubuntu in a virtual box and will try to do git bisect - hopefully will help.
This bug might be similar or related to https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23714
