It is not a dupe of bug 22053. Did you read my description? Disabling Steam Community In-Game does not fix it, and this problem only happens with Source games, not ANY Steam game.
Try rm GameOverlay* once you are logged on steam, before launching the game.
Why don't you think I haven't already tried this? I have, plus non-Source games are running with the overlay flawlessly right now.
