Are you running a pre-compiled Wine version or did you build it yourself? Is the game disc ok?
I use the 1.1.0 version of wine which you can get from the ubuntu repository. I tried to install it both with this version and the script from Playonlinux which uses a custom build version of wine for the game. Both yield the same result.
