Thanks for your extensive analysis, the messages from this list got lost in my
spam folder :-(

Just to clarify, it's "Rtools", not "Rstudio". I've got to ask the people over
there if they might consider upgrading to a more recent cygwin.

Can anything be done on the Wine end to work around this?
