Thanks Sebastian for clearing that up! The situation regarding this fix has
been puzzling many of us for some ~~time~~ years.

I honestly have no idea how the source patch for this was derived, I merely
cleaned it up and made it workable on OSX.  My comment was based on probably
incorrect assumptions I came to whilst adjusting the parameters in final tests.
