Can you tell me what version of the game you have? You should see the game's version number in the main menu of the game in the lower left corner.
I had this issue with version 1.03 on Mint 17.2 but after updating the game to version 1.041 I no longer experience the crash when loading a new game.
I've got 1.041 installed according to the game.
Hmmm weird. Only thing I can recommend is try a clean prefix, if you haven't already, and install version 1.041 from scratch and see if that makes any difference. I believe the game's main installer has been updated to version 1.041 already.
