Apparently it's been a known issue for a while, but I can't find a bug for it.

Easy to reproduce:
$ rm -rf .wine
$ winetricks -q ie7
$ wine iexplore.exe

CRASH!

workarounds:
A)
$ cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files
$ wine iexplore.exe

B)
$ wine "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

C)
$ winetricks -q comctl32
$ WINEDLLOVERRIDES="comctl32=n" wine iexplore.exe
