As far as I know the retail version is Securom 7.00.xx protected (disk check). I have the game from a digital distribution store, it contains no DRM and the game starts properly with both 1.2.3 and the current 1.3.22. Actually, I can reproduce the exact same crash what the OP reported: only when using one of those 'unofficial' exes.
