This problem does not persist if using the winetricks gdiplus library. So in a fresh prefix I ran this: WINEARCH=win32 WINEDEBUG=+gdiplus,+gdi WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_new wine "C:\program files\evernote\evernote\evernote.exe" &>wine_evernote_gdiplus.log I allowed wine Evernote to open, let the search open, switched to another window with the search popup stuck in front, then dismissed evernote, along with the persistent toolbar item it leaves behind. There is a little too much going on at one time to identify the trace where the problem item is - or should be dismissed - gdi is very chatty.
