Regarding this mysterious (to me) difference between the runtime behavior of
gcc 4.1 versus gcc 4.3 compiled Wine, here is one (the only one really)
difference that shows up in the configure stage:

~$ diff gcc41configure.txt gcc43configure.txt

[...]

< checking whether the compiler supports -Wtype-limits... no
---
> checking whether the compiler supports -Wtype-limits... yes
