Update (& sorry for the lack of xliveless info): 

I have found that the game works using patch 1.0.4.0, but not with the latest
patch 1.0.7.0. 

Next problem: sound crackles, e.g. when changing menu items, or in game during
high CPU usage, which I only get with this game in wine and not in GTA SA or in
VLC etc. Not sure if this is a wine issue or an ALSA issue. I see mentions of
underrun in pulseaudio -vvvv.
