I have a 32bit Ubuntu 12.04 inside VirtualBox 4.1.14 (Mac OS X) and a 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 on a physical machine. Both of them have latest wine from PPA installed. $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install wine1.5 Both of them use clean WINEPREFIX. $ rm -rf ~/.wine The gimp version I tested is 2.8. $ openssl sha1 gimp-2.8.0-setup.exe SHA1(gimp-2.8.0-setup.exe)= e75fed214f1c3a45870aad9d028aa76cc886b81b On both Ubuntu, I can successfully launch gimp and open the about dialog. I'd say maybe your host OS is somehow broken.
