Even if I disable the Steam ingame UI it seems causing the problems. Blacklisting the "gameoverlayrenderer.dll" fixed it for me. See http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=9588
Aha! This was the culprit for me too, good call. I disabled the gameoverlayrenderer.dll for hl2 and there we go, no more weird crashing. I have used winetricks as well before, so perhaps that is what made it such an elusive thing to notice. Thank you for mentioning it here!
