after some trial and error, i think i found the initial problem

err:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Resolution change not successful --
perhaps display has changed?

it seems to be failing to change my Xorg resolution for fullscreen play
manually setting it to windowed mode in the config file gets past that and
gives a new error
